“I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and rich is better”
-Mae West
You’ve probably heard a billion times that money cannot buy happiness. Our parents, our so-called teachers, and everyone around us keep echoing this blood-sucking idea into our minds. This is never true. Research shows that income has a positive relationship with life satisfaction, even though it isn’t a straight line.
The amazing impact of additional income is enormous among those who have little or no cash. They say it doesn’t matter as long as they can meet their basic needs. But is that really true?
Money might not be the most important factor in how happy a person is, and there are great reasons to prove that. But hey, even a little money matters. When we compare the average happiness of people who live in different countries, the wealth of the country predicts the happiness of its citizens. The happiest countries are the richest while, well, you know how it is in poor countries (no exceptions made).
Correct me if I’m wrong but, as your own salary has increased over the years, your life has actually become more comfortable. This illustration contains some insights on the relationship between money and happiness. They say “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”, this doesn’t just relate to our relationships only. It plays an important role here too.
I can remember when my family was first able to purchase a flat-screen television and when my family was first able to purchase an air conditioner. For a while, life was pretty good, cool and we had smiles on our faces most of the time. I personally, would never tell someone that money doesn’t matter.
Maybe those of us who are blessed to have extra income can afford comfort because of the relationship between money and happiness. If you think comfort is bad, share your views in the comment section below.
The baseline: Money generates freedom, comfort, smiles, and happiness, while the lack of it, turns us into something bitter (In exception for those who have a ‘good’ reason for not appreciating the power and the relation of money to happiness, whatever that means)
I buy a Lamborghini so that I can drive very slow to work, and you choose to walk a hundred miles to work, in the end, we all have different ideas about money and happiness. The choice is yours!
What are you praying for?
